Flying To Auckland With American Airlines

Auckland is as big, cosmopolitan, and hedonistic as any New Zealand city gets. History and future combine in this sprawling place, where you can walk above the harbor along the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the Sky Tower looms above a sea of skyscrapers. But while the sights are intriguing, it's the easy-going spirit of the Aucklanders and their impressive backyard that will really captivate you. Lush vineyards, sugar-white beaches, and island retreats are all just a hop away from the inner city bustle.

Things to Do

The grand, neoclassical Auckland Museum is a cavernous chest of Maori taonga (treasures); time your visit to catch tattooed Maori sticking their tongues out in the high-energy haka (war dance). Few big international cities are as outdoorsy as Auckland -- locals flash past on rollerblades in Cornwall Park or at Mission Bay, kayak and sail on Waitemata Harbour, and kick back on Waiheke Island -- join in the fun. Ride the glass elevator to the top of the space-age Sky Tower for giddying sunset views of the Auckland skyline.

Shopping

Auckland mixes shopping with sightseeing. You can tour Waiheke Island's gently sloping vineyards for spicy Syrahs and crisp Chardonnays or browse stores in seaside Devonport's historic streets. High Street is decidedly upmarket and harbors big-name designers; and you can browse other fashion-conscious boutiques of Parnell and Ponsonby. Hit colonial-era Queen Street for department stores and Newmarket's classy Nuffield and Teed Streets for chic boutique shopping. Weekend is market time: Head for Pacific-flavored Otara Market, Parnell's La Cigale French Market, or Britomart's City Farmers' Market.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Bar-lined Viaduct Harbour is the place to watch Auckland strut its early-evening stuff. Sip frozen vodka with a too-cool crowd in the ice-carved Minus 5 Bar. Linger over champagne in one of the classy Britomart bars, or dance to the latest beats on Ponsonby Road.Karangahape Road's edgier nightlife kicks off around midnight in pumping bars, strip clubs, and live-music venues. For a more cultured evening, catch the revered New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at the Auckland Town Hall.

Hotels & Restaurants

Foodies can eat their way around the world in Auckland. Savor Pacific Rim cuisine with the in-crowd at one of Viaduct Harbour's see-and-be-seen restaurants. Dine alfresco on Spanish tapas or fresh fish at one of Mission Bay's beachfront cafes and bars. Or head to fashionable Ponsonby Road for relaxed fine dining.

Located on the North Island between two harbors, Auckland is geographically diverse. The area features volcanoes, rainforests, beaches and more ways to appreciate the great outdoors. Plan your trip here with our list of the best of things to do in Auckland.

Start your exploration with a trip to the rainforest, one of our favorite activities in Auckland. Located in the Waitakere Ranges, the Auckland rainforest is one of New Zealand's natural treasures. It's actually just outside the city, featuring over 150 miles of trails that let you explore at your own pace. You'll see gorgeous native trees, plants and flowers along with stunningly pretty waterfalls and beaches. It's no wonder this has been the setting for multiple movies and television shows.

If you'd like to stay in the city, don't worry. There are still plenty of things to do in Auckland that let you connect with nature. With many parks and reserves to choose from, you'll have no shortage of places where you can experience the great outdoors. One of our favorites is the Auckland Doman, located in the central part of the city. Situated on the site of a dormant volcano, it's quite spacious and features multiple trails that let you explore with a leisurely walk. It's also home to gardens of gorgeous plants both native to New Zealand and more exotic species, along with the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland Museum and tranquil duck ponds. This is a perfect spot to bring a picnic lunch!

Spending a day relaxing on a beach is another one of the most popular activities in Auckland. Generally located along the West Coast, these beaches offer a range of sand and trails. One of the best-known black sand beaches is Piha, and it's also known for its surfing and swimming. You can admire rugged cliffs and see the famous Lion Rock here. The Karekare is another one of the prettiest beaches, with seclusion being one of its most attractive assets. It's part of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park and offers simply breathtaking views.

New Zealand is a place of natural beauty that almost defies description -- like no other place on earth. It's somewhere you have to see for yourself, so fly to Auckland! Browse our flights and start planning your trip today.
