Pregnant women and babies

Pregnant Women
Travelling by aeroplane is a safe means of transport for pregnant women, who have not had any previous complications.

The majority of airlines, Iberia amongst them, following the recommendations of the IATA (International Air Transport Association) Medical Manual do not require specific authorisation in these cases until after the 28th week of pregnancy.

After the 28th week of pregnancy you should consult your doctor, who will advise whether or not it is appropriate for you to fly.

IATA recommends that pregnant women do not fly after the 36th week of pregnancy (32 in twin pregnancies without complications). Nevertheless, if travel has to be undertaken during this period then the attending doctor must be consulted and he/she will decide whether or not it is advisable to do so.

Any other circumstance not already mentioned requires the authority of the Iberia Medical Service.

After delivery it is possible to fly after one week has elapsed.

Babies

A new born baby can fly after 48h., but it is recommended that he/she does not do so until a week has passed. Please bear in mind that:

  • Cabin pressure changes can cause babies pain. A painkiller of some description will be required to relieve the pain
  • Babies are susceptible to dehydration. It is therefore recommended that they be kept well hydrated before and during flights.

* Travel on IB5XXX flights is not permitted after the 36th week of pregnancy.
